Army of The Dead, which was released on Netflix. Army of the Dead is a 2021 American zombie heist film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Joby Harold, based on a story he also created. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, and Garret Dillahunt. It follows a group of mercenaries who plan a Las Vegas casino heist amid a zombie apocalypse.
Army of the Dead itself is not Snyder’s first attempt at the Zombie genre. His first big budget film was in the genre, the remake of Dawn of The Dead (2004). The difference is, Dawn of The Dead is a mix of Zombie and Survival Horror while Army of The Dead is a hybrid product of Zombie and Heist Movie.
‘Army of the Dead’ Movie Story
The story of Army of the Dead begins with a traffic accident in the Mojave Desert, Nevada. A new couple who were alone in their car accidentally hit a military convoy carrying a “mysterious package”. Both are killed instantly, but the accident they cause frees a bioweapon created by the American Military: Alpha Zombie aka Zeus.
Zeus is no ordinary zombie. He is the type of zombie who is not only super strong, but also intelligent and able to think. So smart, he can organize his own zombie army. When he was released from the custody of the American Military, he immediately formed his army, burned Las Vegas, and turned it into his “kingdom”.
Only a handful managed to survive Zeus’ attacks. Worried that Zeus and his people would expand the “kingdom” to other states, America ordered a lockdown. Las Vegas was shut down, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars stashed in its casinos. Bly Tanaka, co-owner of the casino there, then hires military veteran Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) to lead the “rescue” of his money left in Las Vegas.

The basic premise offered by Army of The Dead
The basic premise offered by Army of The Dead is quite interesting. While most Zombie films are about survival or humanitarian conflict, Army of the Dead focuses on theft. Unfortunately, Army of The Dead can be said to be all style, no substance. The things that stand out from it are mostly visual. The story development is mediocre, even tends to be like a B-movie. There is no plot that is really engaging, making Army of The Dead feel flat and lose traction when Zombie troops don’t attack.
Compared to the DC trilogy Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League , the Army of The Dead saga is a drop. Probably on the same level as Sucker Punch (2011), Snyder’s fourth film. That’s surprising considering Snyder said the Army of the Dead idea had been in his head for a long time. even since he remake Dawn of The Dead .
Although the story of Army of The Dead is relatively mediocre, at least the film provides interesting characters. Each character, not only Scott Ward, comes with their own uniqueness and complexity. And, like Heist Movies in general, each character has a specific role to play in ensuring the heist is successful. It’s not difficult to identify the characters in Army of The Dead.
Army of The Dead is very Zack Snyder in many ways. All of his characteristics can be found throughout the film, starting from how the action scenes are shown, the vibrant visual director, to his attention to mise en scene and semiotics. Unfortunately, his weakness is that he is not good at telling engaging stories that are carried over to this film. However, if the storytelling problem is put aside, the films that are shown on the Netflix streaming service can still be entertaining.
